Urban climate and fresh air corridors

Urban climate

Due to climate change, hot days are becoming more frequent. Cooling the urban climate is therefore an important component of a sustainable urban concept. Sealed concrete surfaces store heat, while green spaces such as parks provide cooling. Green spaces lead to significant reductions in pollutants. They reduce air pollution and environmental noise, and have a favorable climatic influence Providing sufficient green spaces is therefore an important component of urban planning. Green spaces in cities include: Parks, gardens, urban green spaces, wooded areas, playgrounds and sports fields, street greening and, in a broader sense, agricultural land and recreational areas adjacent to the city. A natural environment supports the physical and mental health of the urban population.

Fresh air corridors

In times of increasing air pollution and rising temperatures, it is also important to provide fresh air corridors. Fresh, clean air can be directed into residential and downtown areas by strategically laying out development.

This is done, for example, by providing contiguous, obstacle-free areas from the surrounding countryside into the urban area. These fresh air corridors must run as far as possible from roads and industrial areas so as not to enrich the air with pollutants.
